Below we have listed some of the amazing activities and adventure that are served up by mother nature on the NSW South Coast.  This list is not comprehensive, but does include all the great things we’ve found so far.

Shoalhaven Zoo (25 minute drive)

zooSet in 16 acres of native bushland on the banks of the Shoalhaven River at North Nowra, this is the largest Zoo on the NSW South Coast, boasting over 100 species of native and exotic mammals, birds and reptiles.  We go there frequently and love it every time.  Privately owned, managed and by all accounts loved with great talks by very helpful staff.  Don’t miss the “Jungle Walk” along the back of the park – our kids favourite.  And the slippery dip – steep, long and scary.  The animals and animal talks are great too, plus you get to cuddle a koala, snakes and all sorts of other animals.zoo2

NB.  The zoo also runs “zoo keeper” experiences which we also highly recommend.  Our children have both done it and “it was the best EVER”.  This place delivers activities, adventure and education.

Trees Adventure (25 minute drive)

treeadTrees Adventure is located right inside Shoalhaven Zoo.  The activities and adventure here are high in the tree canopy will have all the family swinging, leaping, climbing and flying through the forest allowing thrill seekers and nature enthusiasts to experience the trees like never before.

Sessions run for 2 hours including training and the courses become increasingly difficult as you climb higher into the canopy, which means that you can find the right level to suit you. So your kids will have fun 2 meters high in the Trees when your teens will be flying up to 20 meters.  Online bookings essential.

Valhalla Horse Riding (25 minute drive)

valhallahorseA range of family friendly horse rides through the bush, suiting both novice and experienced riders. Some of the rides available are: 1 & 2 hour rides; day rides; camp outs; and twilight rides.

regalrideRegal Riding School Horse Riding (30 minute drive)

Regal Riding School is located at Shoalhaven Heads, just opposite Mountain Ridge Winery.  Regal Riding School is registered with Equestrian Australia and is currently (November 2014) set up for lessons.

Monique and Terry have now introduced activities and adventure rides through the bush and along the beach (along Seven Mile Beach).  If you’re interested and are an experienced rider check for details on their Facebook page.

Culburra Beach Surf School & Hire (15 minute drive)

culburra surfIndulge your need for activities and adventure in the surf.  Learn to surf at beautiful Culburra Beach.  With some of Australia’s best beginner waves it’s easy to be up and riding in no time. Advanced surfers can be sure to get some excellent waves as well. Culburra Beach Surf School is an Academy of Surfing Instructors (ASI) accredited surf school and abide by the high international standards for surf school operations. At Culburra you will often surf with dolphins, watch the wildlife on the beach and chill out surf style.

Jervis Bay Stand Up Paddle (40 minute drive)

jb subJervis Bay Stand Up Paddle operates on the crystal clear waters of the Jervis Bay Marine Park, offering Stand Up Paddle lessons, tours and board hire. Small and large tailored tours provide clients with a fun way to experience the diverse marine environment of the bay and its tributaries.

Stand up paddling is like taking a ‘bushwalk on the water’ minus the walking. It is easy, it is fun, and it is a unique way to experience the Bay.

Free Motion Sports (pick up from beach or boat ramp across the road)

freemotionsportsJohny Vynes boat comfortably seats about 10 people. We went out for the day in wet, cold, windy conditions and had an absolute blast tubing with the kids.  Lots of options are available (from water-skiing to bush walking) ranging in time from just a couple of hours to the whole day.  Best to search his website and book online as phone contact is difficult (he’s usually out being active).

Nowra Golf Range and Putt Putt (10 minute drive)

puttputtFun for the whole family.  It was excellent! We loved it being outdoors and with the new play equipment and golf, all the children were amused the whole time.

The walk starts at The Beach House Culburra. If you want a lovely walk along the beach, Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse Walk is a fantastic one to do. Length about 3km

Husky Ferry (ex Myola 15 minute drive)

husk ferryThe Kelly Marie is plying the tranquil waters of Currambene Creek, operating a regular weekend ferry service from charming Myola to the bustling resort township of Huskisson. Avoid the long drive and parking hassles, simply step aboard and enjoy a leisurely voyage to the heart of Huskisson. Departs Rockwall, the southern end of Catherine Street, Myola. Departs Huskisson Wharf to Myola on quarter past the hour.

Dive sites are chosen daily as dictated by ocean/weather and diving experience.

Jervis Bay Wild (40 minute drive)

Enjoy some time at Huskisson before heading back to Greenwell Point on the courtesy bus at 14:30.

ladydenman1Jervis Bay Maritime Museum & Gallery (40 minute drive)

The Lady Denman Maritime Museum and Gallery is located on 10 hectares and houses a Museum with significant maritime history, Laddie Timbery’s Aboriginal Arts and Crafts, the Museum shop and a vast outdoor recreation space including a boardwalk, fish feeding harbour, and historic buildings. The centrepiece is the Lady Denman – a wooden Inner Harbour Sydney ferry built in Huskisson in 1911 and retired in 1979. She was returned home in 1980, and now rests in a purpose built building to receive her many visitors.

ladydenman2Other museum exhibits include: Koori Coast – the story of the Shoalhaven Aboriginal people; Jervis Bay – the history of Jervis Bay from 1800 to 1939; The Vera Hatton Gallery which hosts travelling exhibitions from far and wide; shipbuilding, shipwrecks and lighthouses as well as the magnificent Halloran Collection housing rare and beautiful surveying/navigational instruments; weapons, artworks and historic maritime artefacts of world significance.

meroogalMeroogal is located in Nowra and was home to four generations of women from the same family, this Gothic revival timber house has hundreds of stories to tell from the multitude of belongings and objects left by each generation. A grand house in its day, by today’s standards it is in fact quite modest. Its women were frugal while its ‘everyday’ life tells an epic story.

Fleet Air Arm Museum

The Museum boasts a 6,000 m2, two-storey exhibition centre, souvenir shop, function centre, theatre and airfield viewing platform, as well as some terrific interactive aircraft and displays.  We love visiting this museum and highly recommend it.


Shoalhaven River Cruise

The Shoalhaven River is stunning. Take to it in your own boat, or charter your own cruise!!



Bundanon is a fair hike from Greenwell Point (from memory it is a 40ish minute drive) but well worth the effort.  Set on the Shoalhaven River was a farm, an artists residence (including Arthur Boyd) and now a fabulous space to relax, or enjoy a show, or host a function, or get artistic.
